What You Need To Know About Candle Painting

Hand-painted candles have been all the rage over the last year and for good reason! Add a touch of creativity by simply adding some fun designs to your taper or pillar candles. The result is a cute and unique decor piece that looks oh-so-good anywhere in your home! At Far and Wide, we love crafts that everyone can do and ones that provide an opportunity to share personal style and creativity. Now, let’s dive into candle painting!

What You Need to Paint Candles

One of the reasons that we love candle painting is that it doesn’t require too much prep or materials. Here are a few of the items that you need to paint candles:

  • Taper or pillar candles
  • Tea lights (or can use other forms of melted wax)
  • Paint brushes (thin brushes work the best)

How to Paint Your Candles

Now the fun part begins! Once you have brainstormed the design you want to try, you can start with these simple steps:

01. Prep Your Space

Lay parchment paper over the table to catch wax if it drips.

02. Melt the Tea Lights

Choose one colour to work with first, and light the tea light. Once the wax has melted a bit and you see some liquid wax form, dip the paintbrush in it.

03. Create Your Wax Design

Use a paintbrush to paint on a design. When you’re finished using one colour, you can heat a second candle and start adding designs using that colour. You’ll see that the wax hardens very quickly.

04. Display Your Candle

You gotta show off your cute candles! Stagger them on shelves, elevate a side table, or set the mood when setting the table for dinner.

Tips and Tricks

After doing this event in our shop, we have a few tips and tricks that work well!

  • It is better to dab the wax onto the candles than try to paint it on.
  • Pick contrasting colours for more bold and striking designs.
  • Work with one colour at a time, and use only a couple of colours otherwise the candle can start looking messy.
  • To clean the brush, pinch and slide the dried wax off the brush.
  • Be patient, it can take some practice!
  • Make sure the designs are not too small and detailed since the wax can glob.
  • Paint whatever shapes or designs you want, but if you need inspiration, Pinterest is always a great place to look. Some of our favourite designs are hearts, cherries, flowers, stars, abstract shapes, and squiggles!
